The number of short contracts (6055K) are more than the longs (3635K), however this doesn't cause an equivalent price drop. This is called absorption. The "composite man" is collecting the contracts, but not introducing them back to the market in order to sell higher.
Meaningful volume spikes with no meaningful effects are signs of manipulation.
