The Brazilian economy has faced several challenges in recent years, including political instability, high inflation rates, a weakening currency, and a slow economic growth rate. Brazil's GDP shrank by 4.1% in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the country is still struggling to recover from the economic fallout.

Additionally, Brazil has a complex tax system, high bureaucratic costs, and issues with corruption, which can make it difficult for businesses to operate efficiently and attract foreign investment.

The United States may impose sanctions on Brazil if it believes that Brazil has engaged in activities that are counter to its interests or violate international norms, regardless of Brazil's membership in the BRICS group. For example, the United States has imposed sanctions on Russia, a fellow BRICS member, in response to its actions in Ukraine and alleged interference in U.S. elections. Brazil, along with Russia, India, China, and later South Africa, formed the BRICS group in 2006 with the aim of increasing their influence in global affairs and promoting economic development. Brazil and Russia share similar views on some geopolitical issues, such as their support for a multipolar world order and their opposition to Western military intervention. Joining forces with Russia and the other BRICS countries can help Brazil advance its interests on these issues.
