Although the degree of the correlation tends to vary there is an inverse relationship.
This is because Japanese Yen is considered a "Safe-Haven" currency, i.e. people buy Yen when stocks (and their exchanges, such as the Nikkei) are doing poorly, and sell their Yen when Stocks are doing well.
