Fundamentally: - It does not compete with BTC on hash power. - It's a testing space for new tech. SegWit, Lightning, Confidential Transactions, Mimble Wimble.
In the short term: - It's cheaper and faster to get onto the BTC LN with LTC with Atomic Swaps. - It's on every exchange as BTC. - It's on every ATM as BTC.
In the long term: BTC can't scale to handle everyone in the world. Just last year the Mem Pool was at capacity. With SegWit the Mem Pool has doubled but BTC can only support a fraction of the world's population, that's also where LTC comes in. What happens when Layer 1 Memory Pool is full and we want to avoid big blocks to prevent centralization of mining. SegWit2x was an attempted power grab by the miners.
