As traders we are often on a quest for financial freedom and overall happiness - traders are oftentimes believers that a strong mind will best control our outcomes.
Maslow's Hierarchy of needs is a psychology idea dating back to 1943. One must work their way up the pyramid to achieve a state of real happiness (thriving rather than surviving).
Each deficit does not need to be 100% satisfied, but rather "more or less" satisfied, before moving into the next deficit. Our activities and habits become directed towards meeting the next set of needs once the previous set is met.
Although everybody is capable of moving up the hierarchy to become a self-actualized person, many fail due to a lack of progress on the first four needs. Maslow predicts that only 2% of people ever become "self-actualized".
Characteristics of Self Actualized People: (including Abraham Lincoln and Albert Einstein)
Perceive reality efficiently, and tolerate uncertainty
Accept themselves and others for what they are
Highly Creative
Resistant to enculturation, but not purposely unconventional
Establish deep satisfying interpersonal relationships with a few people
Behavior Leading to Self Actualization:
Trying new things rather than sticking to safe paths
Avoiding "game-playing" and being honest
Taking responsibility and working hard
Trying to identify your defenses/insecurities, and giving them up
