When Fear Reigns Banking Majors GainIn times of crisis, investors rush to safety. When risk shows in places of safety, bank runs begin. One's pain is someone else's gain. Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) & Signature Banks' combined assets at $300 billion is witnessing a flight to safety.
At $300 billion, it is trivial relative to $23 trillion within the American banking system. Remember that the FDIC only insures deposits up to USD 250k. Both institutional and individual clients holding large deposits in regional banks are rushing to move their funds from regional to major banks.
Between 2020 and 2022, regional bank index outperformed the broader bank index. Regional banks business was designed to be lean - collect deposits and extend loans to home buyers and local businesses.
This was meant to be less risky relative to banking majors whose businesses were sophisticated and inherently risky. Hence the banking relief law passed in 2018, made regulations less onerous to banks with domestic assets of less than $250 billion.
As a result, by end of 2022, US had 2,100 banks with $19.8 trillion in assets. Only ten out of these 2,100 banks had domestic assets more than $250 billion.
Lax regulations led some regional banks astray with concentrated bets on customer segments and risk management of asset and liability maturity risk. With rates rising, tides receding, banks that were swimming naked became obvious.
Chart below contrasts the impact of unrealised losses on select US bank's tier 1 capital ratio. It is little surprise that SVB imploded with such an adverse capital situation when unrealised losses were accounted for.
Now as crisis of confidence in banking spreads across both sides of the Atlantic, depositors are rushing to move their money to larger safer bank and money markets.
FT reported on March 15th that large US banks are getting flooded with fund transfer requests from regional banks. SVB has triggered a tectonic shift in deposits unseen in more than a decade. Veteran hands know well that anxiety created by small shocks make larger crises less likely.
JPM, Citigroup are among the beneficiaries of regional bank pains. To aid customers to move deposits swiftly, these banks are taking extra steps to speed up client onboarding. It is reported that these banks are reassigning employees to account opening linked jobs to handle workload and to hasten the process.
HNI’s Shifting to Large Banks
Despite the liquidity backstop promise extended by US Fed and US Treasury, depositors are moving funds into larger banks such as JPM, Citi and Bank of America. This phenomenon is more so for accounts holding >$250k (the limit up to which is guaranteed by FDIC).
The 25 biggest US banks gained $120B in deposits in the days following the collapse of SVB and Signature while smaller banks saw a net outflow of $108B during that period. This has been the largest weekly decline in deposits at small banks and poses the risk of inciting more financial instability.
Citi’s private bank servicing wealthy individuals is opening accounts within a day compared to usual timeline of one to two weeks. Citi is reported to open accounts & initiate fund transfers even as new clients are under compliance checks.
Larger banks are subject to significantly tougher regulatory scrutiny as a result they become attractive destinations for shell-shocked depositors.
Portfolio diversification is not new. Long shadow cast by the debacle of three sizeable banks within a space of a week has exposed the fragility in the system. This has prompted depositors to diversify not only their portfolios but also their banks.
Moreover, comparing the actual assets held by large banks to mid-sized banks:
SVB and Silvergate, both of which collapsed had their assets largely held in bonds held to maturity or available for sale. For SVB, the maturity date was in the far future, posing liquidity concerns when a bank run ensued.
By contrast, Silvergate largely had bonds available for sale but selling them all at once would have caused huge realized losses.
Another interesting takeaway is the way in which each regional mid-sized bank adopts a different portfolio tailored for their specific clientele and their needs. Although, this allows them to fine-tune their operations and holdings, it comes with the downside of financial instability during periods of aggressive rate hikes and economic uncertainty.
By contrast, Citigroup, JP Morgan, BoA, and PNC have portfolios that are well diversified with a healthy mix of cash & interbank loans, loans, bonds to maturity, and bonds available for sale. Crucially, their significant cash holdings allow them to weather the storm far better and eases any liquidity concerns for depositors.
Capital Flow Towards Asset Managers
Large asset managers are also witnessing an influx of funds. Seemingly the money is moving away from regional banks and into majors and asset managers offering access to money market funds. Money market funds which hold US Government Debt are considered the safest destination for large amounts of fund given the overwhelming uncertainty in the banking sector. They also have the added advantage of offering investors seniority in case of bankruptcy proceedings.
Certain MMF’s are currently offering yields as high as 5.02% compared to a paltry 0.23% average for bank deposits, making the shift towards MMF’s a no-brainer for many.
More than $300B has flown into money market funds in March taking the overall assets in money market funds to a record $5.1T. This also represents the largest month of inflows for asset managers since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Goldman, Fidelity, and JPM are the biggest beneficiaries from these inflows.
Goldman’s US money market funds have increased by $52B or 13% since the beginning of the banking crisis on March 9th. JPM’s funds received $46B while Fidelity saw $37B of inflows according to data from iMoneyNet.
Capital Flow into Gold
Gold is one of the most prominent safe haven assets that investors look to in times of economic uncertainty and instability. This capital flow was seen during the 2008 financial crisis when bank deposits plummeted and Gold price skyrocketed.
The same can now be seen on an even larger scale. Commercial bank deposits have plummeted well below even 2008 levels while the price of gold is teetering around $2,000/ounce, the highest price ever.
Although, some gold investors choose to buy physical gold or jewellery, larger investors often opt for other instruments that are more cost effective such as ETF’s or Futures. This too offers the larger banks a huge opportunity to benefit from the inflow of capital into gold-linked products through their investment banking divisions.
GLD, or SPDR gold trust is the largest Gold ETF. It saw a net inflow of $915M in March. The same can be seen in CME’s GC futures which saw managed money traders increase their net long positions by 5x or 83k contracts ~$16B.
Trade Setup
This case study illustrates potential gains to be harvested from spread trades as funds move from regional banks to majors. With rates remaining elevated the majors enjoy a comfortable Net Interest Margin. Rising deposit base by cherry picking high credit quality customers will enable banking majors to vastly outperform the regional banks.
Therefore, this case study sets for three spread trades -
(a) Long JPM and Short KBWR (1:3)
(b) Long COF and Short KBWR (1:2)
(c) Long C and Short KBWR (1:1)
A spread trade requires that the notional values of each leg of the trade to be identical. Accordingly, the ratios above have been provided based on the closing prices as of April 3rd. Table below sets out entry, target, stop and reward-to-risk ratio for each of these trades.
Long JP Morgan & Short KBWR
● Entry: 2.82
● Target: 3.17
● Stop: 2.62
● Profit at Target: $16
● Loss at Stop: $9.5
● Reward-to-Risk Ratio: 1.7x
Long Capital One Financial & Short KBWR
● Entry: 2.08
● Target: 2.54
● Stop: 1.9
● Profit at Target: $21
● Loss at Stop: $8.5
● Reward-to-Risk Ratio: 2.5x
Long Citibank & Short KBWR
● Entry: 1.01
● Target: 1.19
● Stop: 0.937
● Profit at Target: $8

Banks
SI Silvergate Capital going to $0???If you haven`t sold crypto`s favorite bank, SI Silvergate, here:
Then you should know that Silvergate Capital Corp, the parent company of Silvergate Bank, announced its closure and liquidation of assets on Wednesday.
Shortly after, New York state banking regulators closed down Signature Bank to prevent the fallout from the failure of Silicon Valley Bank.
Lawyers representing plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit by FTX customers against 18 defendants, including Signature and Silvergate, claim that these events will severely limit the amount of money they can access if they can prove the banks are responsible.
Kerry Miller of Fishman Haygood, whose firm filed the lawsuit in Miami federal court, stated that FTX customers may have to rely on insurance policies covering the banks' top executives and board members since these events impose another hurdle.
Haven`t seen any bidders for it, or other banks supporting SI SIlvergate.
Most likely to file for bankruptcy and go to $0.
Looking forward to read your opinion about it.
JPM JPMorgan Chase Call OptionsIf you haven`t sold JPM here:
or here:
then you should know that JPM JPMorgan Chase seems to be most capitalized bank in the US, ready for the economic hurricane that its CEO, Jamie Dimon, predicted.
Most business and retail clients will move their funds to JPM after this bank run.
Looking at the JPM JPMorgan Chase options chain, I would buy the $140 strike price Calls with
2023-7-21 expiration date for about
$3.95 premium.
If the options turn out to be profitable Before the earnings release, i would sell at least 50%.
Looking forward to read your opinion about it.
BAC Bank of America Medium Term OptionsI think BAC Bank of America is one of the few beneficiaries of the small banks bank run that we are witnessing today.
Big banks are the safest places where you can place your money right now.
Looking at the BAC Bank of America options chain, i would buy the $30 strike price Calls with
2024-1-19 expiration date for about
$2.85 premium.
Looking forward to read your opinion about it.
DBS to Gain as Funds Rain in SingaporeDBS is positioned uniquely at the intersection of both India and China to gain from growth in both countries. Facilitating capital flows out of China, continued rising footprint in India, digital asset presence, a trusted bank in Singapore which is emerging as the Swiss of Asia, DBS has more than one source of tailwind powering its upward flight.
Specifically, this paper identifies five key drivers powering DBS shares. Against the backdrop of sharp recession ahead, this paper posits a case study delivering 2.8x reward to risk ratio through a spread comprising of long DBS shares and short MSCI Singapore Index futures to gain from expected outperformance.
The DBS Story
Launched >50 years ago, DBS is the largest bank in South-East Asia and rubbing shoulders among global banks with S$743B in assets as of December 2022. Its diverse services cover consumer banking, asset management, brokerage, and digital assets. DBS' robust capital position, strong governance, and solid operational practices, with MAS as the regulator, makes it a bank with the highest credit ratings in APAC.
“Live More, Bank Less” defines the essence of the bank's strategy. DBS aspiration goes beyond being the best bank but aspires to deliver experience that's world class and on par with GANDALF firms. GANDALF stands for Google, Amazon, Netflix, Apple, LinkedIn, and Facebook. And D? DBS, of course.
A key figure in the transformation has been its CEO Piyush Gupta who has helmed its leadership since 2009 and is seen as instrumental in the bank's meteoric rise as a global banking player.
Last year, DBS delivered stunning record profits of S$8.2B driven by surging rates. 2022 was not entirely hunky dory as fees and commissions declined 12% YoY.
DBS expects 2023 to be better with a forecast of double-digit fee income growth plus rising income from cards business. While loan growth slowed with rising rates, DBS continued to gain market share across both corporate and consumer loans.
Key growth driver for DBS in 2023 and for the rest of the decade is the wealth migration from China. Singapore is a key destination for capital taking flight out of China. DBS is strongly positioned to take advantage of this as a trusted and customer-focused banking partner.
Five factors to propel DBS shares ahead:
1. Chinese Wealth Migration
Ultra rich Chinese have been emigrating with Singapore as the preferred destination. China’s crackdown on its business and entrepreneur class with a focus on “common prosperity”.
China faced capital flight of about $150B annually from its citizens migrating. Capital flight in 2023 is expected to be far higher, with some estimates suggesting it could top $100-$200B.
About 10,800 rich Chinese migrated in 2022, the highest since 2019, according to Henley & Partners. China has the world’s second-largest number of ultra-rich with more than 32,000 people holding wealth more than $50M.
DBS holds a key position to capitalize on this trend as the leading and trusted bank in Singapore. It is not just the Chinese but also the wealthy from India, Indonesia and Thailand finding Singapore as a convenient home for them and their wealth.
2. Regional Expansion via Digital First Strategy
DBS’s digitization dovetails nicely into their regional expansion as digitised infrastructure easily transcends geography.
Case in point is DBS' expansion into India. It had its presence in India since 1994. However, it was with the launch of Digibank India in 2016 that propelled its footprint in the country.
Digibank India was the first mobile-only, paperless, signatureless, and branchless bank in India. This allowed them to expand rapidly in the country while India was going through its own financial digitization following demonetization exercise in 2016. This provided DBS with a strong launchpad while keeping operational costs at bay.
DBS India has seen its deposits grow consistently since launch with a huge jump following the acquisition of Laxmi Vilas Bank (LVB). Over the past 3 years, DBS India has doubled its revenue. DBS has been profitable since launch, except for a tiny loss in 2017-18. LVB acquisition enabled DBS to expand its branch presence nearly 18x from mere 30 to >500.
3. Bold Forays into Digital Assets
In 2020, DBS launched DBS Digital Exchange (DDEx) enabling institutional and accredited investors to access digital assets.
With rising regulations for crypto firms, a fully regulated digital exchange like DDEx from a trusted bank such as DBS is a safe haven for digital asset investors.
Success of DDEx is evident in its performance in 2022 when BTC trading on the exchange increased 80% YoY. BTC’s custodied on the exchange also doubled while ETH custodied on the exchange increased 60%. DDEx also doubled its customer base to nearly 1,200 last year.
4. Deep Digitisation
CEO inspired DBS' purpose driven digital adoption agenda in 2014, with a five-year roadmap and a lofty aim of being named the best bank in the world.
DBS approached the challenge by thinking and operating like a major tech firm instead of a bank. It overhauled its internal tech, 90% of which was developed and managed in-house making it cloud-native enabling rapid scaling and easy deployment.
DBS pioneered “Digibank,” a mobile only bank that allowed it to scale rapidly and with low cost per retail customer. Digital customers have two times higher income per client compared to traditional clients with cost to income ratio of 34% relative to 54% for traditional clients.
5. Startup Mentality
Making Banking Joyful. DBS is deliberate in becoming ever more customer-centric by cleverly tailoring each customer journey to be hassle-free and enjoyable. The bank aims to become “invisible” to its customer while meeting their banking, financial, and investing needs.
In instilling a start-up culture, the leadership team continues to cultivate agility, continuous learning, customer obsession, data-driven experimentation and risk-taking across the organisation.
DBS Outperforms other Singapore Banks
Among top three Singapore Banks:
• DBS has the highest ROE at 14.95%.
• DBS operating margins of 41.5% are far higher than others.
• DBS margins are twice those of OCBC.
• DBS grew its Free Cash Flow at 76.5% YoY, far higher than others.
• DBS has the lowest P/E ratio making the stock relatively undervalued.
• DBS ROIC of 8.2% is marginally lower than OCBC’s 8.75%
• DBS asset growth of 8.3% YoY in 2022, lower than UOB’s 9.8%.
This puts DBS in a far better financial position than the other Singapore banks.
The better performance is also highlighted by DBS stock’s price action. Since Piyush Gupta took over as CEO in 2009, DBS has outperformed OCBC and UOB by an outsized margin and the stock stands nearly 300% higher in the period.
Similarly, since the start of 2020, DBS is up 29% and has outperformed the other two banks vindicating its strategy and execution.
Comparative Analysis with Other Global Banks
DBS shines bright among the global banking majors too as evident below.
• DBS has the highest Return on Equity at 15%
• DBS has the highest Return on Invested Capital at 8.2%
• DBS price to earnings is 6.85 only higher than BNP & Barclays
DBS strong operational efficiency stands out even among the top global bank. Additionally, DBS reported 8.3% annual asset growth in 2022, compared to US banks which have had moderate asset growth or decline.
Since 2009, DBS stock has far outperformed other major global banks and stands second only to JP Morgan.
Notably, DBS has also outperformed the KBW Bank ETF which tracks the performance of US Banks signalling that DBS has been providing stronger growth than the average growth of the US banking industry, particularly during the high-inflation environment of 2022.
The trend is even more apparent when looking at the performance of these stocks since the start of 2020. Among the selected banks, DBS is the only bank that has shown strong gains during the pandemic and stands ~30% higher. Other banks have either posted modest gains or losses.
In addition to providing strong growth, which is reflected in DBS stock’s price action, DBS also has a strong commitment to returning value to shareholders which can be seen from their nearly 4.1% dividend yield.
DBS annual dividend yield has grown by about 100 bps since 2020. Its dividend in 2022 of S$1.5/share exceeded pre-pandemic levels. DBS also announced a special S$0.5/share dividend last quarter reflecting improved earnings profile and strong capital position.
2023 Growth Outlook
Analysts expect DBS to continue its meteoric rise, with an average forecast of 15% growth in 2023. Some analysts expect DBS to be 31% higher while even the lowest forecasts are for -11% decline.
Key drivers for this growth are expected to be:
• Lean operational strategy and structure leading to lower operational costs.
• Capital outflows from China.
• Regional expansion strategy using their digital banking template.
DBS stock has rallied 86% since March 2020, compared to the Straits Times Index which is only 36% higher in the same period. DBS is the largest constituent of the STI and a major driver of growth for Singapore stocks.
Overall, DBS bucked the overall trend in the banking sector and provided growth in an immensely challenging environment by focusing on sustainable growth and lower costs.
What about the banking crisis?
Investing in bank stocks when uncertainty in the sector is so high can be daunting. The collapse of SVB, shuttering of Signature, and acquisition of Credit Suisse has incited turmoil in markets despite central banks stepping in to ease liquidity concerns and avoid contagion.
Amid the crisis there has been discussion of loose regulatory practices and risky bets. However, in Singapore, MAS keeps a tight check on the risk management of banks in the country.
According to Moody’s, DBS bank still has the highest tier credit ratings and none of its holding are currently under watch. Such stellar ratings suggest that DBS has extremely strong capacity to meet its financial commitments, making it unlikely to be affected by any remaining contagion in the sector.
MAS’s strict stewardship of Singapore banks was underscored by a recent outage in DBS digital services. Though the services were promptly restored on the same day, MAS ordered a thorough investigation into the outage. The outage also affected DBS stock price, driving it 1.5% lower but the stock quickly recovered. Both highlight the resilience in the regulatory, operational, and governance practices at DBS.
Trade Setup
In times of elevated stress, stock betas can spike causing share prices to tank on macroeconomic shocks. To harness pure alpha, this paper posits a spread with long DBS and short MSCI Singapore Index futures.
The spread trade ensures that the position remains hedged against a broader market downturn. DBS has outperformed MSCI Singapore index consistently over the past 10 years.
MSCI Futures on SGX (SGP1!) give exposure to S$100 x index price which translates into a notional value of S$30,905. On SGX, lot sizes for individual stocks are 100 which means that in order to balance the notional on both legs, 9 lots of DBS shares are required which translates into a notional value of S$30,042.
Entry: 10.8%
Target Level: 12.5%
Stop Level: 10.2%
Profit at Target: S$ 4,726
Loss at Stop: S$ 1,671

📈 Bittrex Leaves the US, USA To Ban Bitcoin? China 2.0Bittrex leaves the USA due to a hostile regulatory environment. They claim the laws are not clear when it comes to Cryptocurrencies; this got me thinking...
Will the USA ban Bitcoin China style?
Leave a comment with your thoughts on this idea.
It is probable that they will try to ban Bitcoin before launching the CBDC.
A Bitcoin ban would send Bitcoin straight to $100K ($100,000.00 USD per BTC).
What are your thoughts on this?
Namaste.
P.S. Banking crisis not over, coming back with a vengeance in a few months. Be prepared!

⚠️ 🔥 Systemic Risks Alert & the 3 De-couplingsThis is long 20 min video. I think i reached the limit as i didn't manage to finish the recording but you will get the point. You better get the point or you might run deadly risks going Long or Short....
I am going to start with the 3 de-couplings:
1. China-US Decoupling
2. Banks - Crypto decoupling
3. Crypto-Indices decoupling
I cover all 3 in the video plus i offer my insights on how to approach the trading part (hedge mode is ON).
Potential Systemic Risk events:
1. Banks.. not looking good, it's quiet now but willit be under control?
2. Attack on the petrodollar. Will US lose the superpower status? Ask Saudi Arabia
3. War. Will it stay just in Ukraine? Combine it with (2) and it could be bad.

US Regional Banks: Is the Worst Over?📝The KBW NASDAQ REGIONAL BANKING INDEX is a stock index composed of regional US banks operating in one or several geographic regions of the country. These banks tend to be smaller in size than the large national banks, and generally offer banking services to businesses and individuals in their areas of operation.
Index performance is affected by a number of factors, including the health of the regional economy in which these banks operate, interest rates and regulatory policies that affect the banking industry.
📈 Looking in parallel with the S&P500 index, we see that it anticipated the 2008 crisis.
Now KBW is in a decisive region, at the same level as before that crisis.
The resistance and support levels that delimit this region are in green and red, respectively.
Whether it will rise or fall, I don't know...
For now I'm just stating this fact.
What I can say is that if the index breaks below the red dotted line, it will be an indication that the banking sector could experience more turmoil.
💾 Deutsche Bank | This Is Only The BeginningThe Deutsche Bank peaked more than a year ago in February 2022.
Late January 2023 a lower high was confirmed.
✔️ The crash is now ongoing but this is only the beginning.
- The MACD entered the bearish zone while trending down with strong momentum.
- The RSI is now extremely bearish.
- It is the first time that this stock breaks below MA200 weekly on the downside since August 2015.
This is only the beginning...
You can expect more red.

$TNX & short term yields breaking support levelsWhile the #fed reserve has made it clear they're not stopping rate increases yet, #bonds yields put a top in days ago. $TNX actually did it some time ago!
We noticed certain sectors, like insurance, began lowering premiums done time ago. Did they know something was start didn't?
Small community banks are getting crushed and if rates crater it may alleviate the balance sheets of those remaining.
Anyway, the fed tends to overdo everything they do. Many are calling recession or something much harsher. Time will tell but banks going busy is not a good sign.
Will Morgan Stanley Bank continue in selloff?Morgan Stanley - 30d expiry - We look to Sell a break of 83.18 (stop at 86.32)
Short term bias has turned negative.
There is no indication that the selloff is coming to an end.
This stock fell 6.5 % last week.
A break of the recent low at 83.28 should result in a further move lower.

Gold Down To 1926$ ?Gold prices traded just below their strongest levels in 11 months on Monday as markets gauged the impact of emergency liquidity measures from the Federal Reserve and other major central banks amid increasing fears of a banking crisis. The increased liquidity measures by the Fed also undermine a year of monetary tightening done by the bank to curb inflation, and are likely to keep gold demand supported. So for me It will be a pressure of fear for buying the gold metal and that will push him a little down .
USD Hangs in the Balance: Bank Chaos vs. Inflation The US Federal Reserve is about to begin its two-day policy meeting and will announce its latest interest rate decision 48 hours later. During the meeting, officials will weigh the possibility of raising interest rates due to inflation, which is still considered high, or whether the current turmoil in financial markets should be given more weight. Unfortunately, the pre-meeting blackout period prohibits officials from commenting on the situation.
UBS shares, which had dropped over 14%, managed to recover by closing 1.2% higher after the bank provided a 3 billion Swiss franc ($3.2 billion) emergency rescue package for its troubled domestic rival, Credit Suisse. The large size of Credit Suisse's balance sheet, which stands at around 530 billion Swiss francs as of the end of 2022, is a concern for the global banking system, as it is twice the size of Lehman Brothers' when it collapsed in 2008.
The Federal Reserve, in response to the Credit Suisse crisis and the failures of a few US regional banks, has begun offering daily currency swaps to central banks in Canada, Britain, Japan, Switzerland, and the euro zone in order to ease funding stress in global markets.
With all this going on, traders are uncertain whether the Federal Reserve will raise its benchmark policy rate on Wednesday (US time). The dollar index fell below 103.5 on Monday for the third session in a row as investors anticipate that the Federal Reserve might not increase rates as much as previously expected due to the banking crises.
Fed funds futures reflect a 70% probability of a quarter-percentage point rate hike, with a 30% chance of no change. A significant drop in near-term inflation expectations is also contributing to the expectation of the Fed pausing its rate hikes, as expectation for the near-term inflation reached nearly a two-year low last month.
In other news, oil prices declined to their lowest point in 15 months on Monday due to concerns that the risks in the global banking sector may lead to a recession. Gold prices, which had surged 6.4% in the previous week, fell to $1,980 an ounce on Monday but remained close to the one-year high of $2,009 hit earlier in the session.
Bitcoin is doing exactly what it was designed to do!Traders,
These are the times in history when we are supposed to see heroes rise to the occasion. With the trust in the U.S. dollar faltering a bit, lead by the failures of some major banks (Silicon, Silicon Valley, Signature, Credit Suisse), the time for Bitcoin to shine is now. And it has!
To some, the recent move up in Bitcoin came as a surprise. However, it shouldn't have been. This is what Bitcoin was designed for, to provide a hedge against the failures of large centralized institutions and the eventual inherent risk of holding the U.S. dollar. And it's doing exactly that remarkably well.
We should expect this type of response from Bitcoin again in the future as we continue to see cracks in the system laid bare!
