Tracking Economy with this Ratio – Copper vs Gold RatioThe Fed is using the Copper / Gold ratio in tracking economy and its growth.
Currently, the copper / gold ratio is still trending downward, which indicates that the economy may not be recovering that soon.

Copper is Next to Move, Why?Copper is next to move because the Chinese consumers may be coming back.
In last December's tutorial, we discussed how Gold was breaking above $2K and set to move higher, which it did. In April, we anticipated that Silver would soon catch up, and it did as well. Now, I believe Copper will be next, not just based on technical but also on fundamentals.

Copper's Short-Term Demand Woes, Long-Term GapsCopper is known as the electrifying metal.
Copper's warm glow and durable spirit, copper wires the heart of many a machine.
This reddish rarity has been super bullish in the recent past but less so now. That doesn't make it less investable. Just that nuanced investing approach is called for.
Outlook for copper has become mixed once more, with near term demand remaining downbeat given the continued slowdown in the Chinese property market and buildup in copper stock at SHFE. In the longer term, supply challenges risk pushing copper into a supply deficit with major copper miners Codelco and Anglo American facing supply challenges.
Given the mixed outlook, copper has continued to trade in a tighter price range over the past two months. Counter to conventional wisdom, a sideways market also presents opportunities for savvy investors. This paper describes the diverging outlook for the red metal and how investors can deploy a calendar spread using CME Micro Copper futures amid the diverging short and long-term outlook.
CHINESE COPPER INVENTORIES BUILD UP BECAUSE OF DEMAND SLOWDOWN
Chinese copper inventories have surged to one of their highest historical levels. Furthermore, inventories have been rising during the part of the year associated with drawdowns.
Source – Bloomberg
Lower demand is one of the factors behind the increasing inventories. The Chinese real estate sector is a major consumer of copper. With the ongoing slowdown in the sector, copper demand has been hit hard. Moreover, manufacturing sector in China is also experiencing a slowdown as China’s official manufacturing PMI dipped back into contraction in May.
Source: TradingEconomics
Combination of property market slowdown and lower industrial activity is hindering copper demand in the near term.
Furthermore, refined copper production among Chinese copper smelters has remained near all-time high levels over the past few months.

BULLISH SUPPLY SIDE AND INDUSTRIAL RECOVERY POSE UPSIDE TO COPPER
While near-term demand outlook may be downbeat, the medium- and long-term outlook for copper remain bullish. In the medium term, higher demand from the rapidly growing PV (photovoltaic) manufacturing and EV industry are absorbing some of the higher copper supply.
While both industries have slowed in recent months, analysts expect them to recover. At their current pace of copper consumption, these industries are more than compensating for the slowdown in the property market.
Source: Reuters
Additionally, major copper miners, Codelco and Anglo American are dealing with lower production.
Codelco, the world's largest copper producer, reported a 9.4% decline in production in the latest quarter compared to the previous year. This decline is attributed to falling ore grades, water restrictions, union protests, and logistical challenges exacerbated by the global situation, including the pandemic and geopolitical tensions. Anglo American also announced plans to reduce its copper production in 2024 as part of a strategy to cut costs and adapt to market conditions.
Lower output from major copper miners is a cause for concern given the rapid pace at which the new energy industries such as EVs and PVs are growing as well as the rapid growth in data centers which require substantial amount of copper. With inadequate supply, copper supplies face the risk of being pushed into a deficit.
ASSET MANAGERS HAVE REVERSED VIEW ON COPPER BULLISHNESS
While asset managers had built up substantial long positions during the sharp rally in copper which took price to an all-time high, they have started to close some of those long positions indicating that in the near-term price may have run ahead of themselves.
Source: CME QuikStrike
Over the past week, September CME options have seen a buildup in puts while calls have declined. The November contract has seen a similar trend. However, the March 2025 contract has seen a surge in call OI.
Source: CME QuikStrike
In a similar vein, CME copper future’s term structure has shifted from a steep contango to backwardation over the last three months. However, over the past week, this has started to shift once more as premium of later contracts over front month has started to rise leading to a steepening term structure.
HYPOTHETICAL TRADE SETUP
Given the diverging outlook for copper in the near-term and later term, investors can express a view on the shift in term structure using a calendar spread consisting of CME Micro Copper futures.
The below hypothetical trade setup consists of a long position in Micro Copper futures expiring in March 2025 (MHGH2025) and a short position in Micro Copper futures expiring in August 2024 (MHGQ2024).
Investors can also deploy the same trade setup using CME full-size copper futures. The CME full-size copper futures also provide a margin offset for the trade, a calendar spread with the same contract can be deployed with maintenance margin of USD 2,500 as of 24/June.
The below hypothetical trade setup provides a reward to risk ratio of 1.43x.
Entry: 1.011
Target: 1.055
Stop Loss: 0.98
Profit at Target: USD 492
Loss at Stop: USD 342
Reward to Risk: 1.43x

HG Copper Futures LONGHG - copper demand is higher this year as the economy expands globally. On the 60 minute chart
price hit a high pivot on May 15th and pulled back in a standard Fib 0.5 fhsion. Price
has touched the upper boundary of that support three times and has now printed a wide range
green HA candle. I believe that this is a reversal pattern and will take a long trade here
targeting the pivot high mentioned. This is a 5% expectant profit amplified by the leverage
of a futures trade.I see this as a safe trade of a commodity that has a bullish bias overall.
I am also looking for some increased volume at this juncture to assure that some buying
momentum is coming into the market.
HG Copper Futures- Short to Long SetupHG is on the 30 minute chart with a set of EMAs ( 7- blue 20-red and 100-black) ascended
6 % in 7 days from the morning of 4/23 to the evening of 4/29. This is traded with a leverage
of 25. A short trade taken on the reversal is now impending closure. The short falls faster than
the long climbs and will yield about another 6% in 24 hours or so. The trade is setup to close
when price crosses the EMA7 and stays above it for three consecutive candles ( 90 minutes).
I long trade will then be contemplated to continue to take full advantage of the volatility.
The RSI indicator should show a rise toward the 50 level to validate a long trade and some
green buying volume candles should print. Rinse and repeat.
HG Futures, Copper's Potential Rise: Monthly, Weekly, Daily.Monthly is winding up for a big drop or huge jump.
Monthly:
Weekly:
Daily shows price winding up potentially the rest of the year. So I will look towards year end for the fireworks, that will decide if our pent up momentum will release upwards or downwards.
My gut says inflation will send it upward in the near future.

COPPER looks doomed on the long-term. Sell the rallies.Copper (HG1!) on the 1W time-frame appears to be repeating the previous major Bear Cycle that started in 2011/12. Based on this fractal analysis, the recent 1W rejection just below the 1W MA50 (blue trend-line) puts us at a proportionate level as on the February 06 2012 1W candle. Having rebounded on the 1W MA100 (green trend-line) both on the July 11 and September 26 candles, we expect initially to reach it again and then rebound to make a Lower High and form a trend-line similar to that of 2012 - 2014 that made structured Highs to sell that took Copper to the 2.000 - 1.9360 Support Zone.
This long-term bearish pattern will get invalidated if the price breaks above the 0.618 Fibonacci extension, which was where (slightly below) the price was rejected on the February 06 2012 1W candle.

Copper HG - Is It Finally Time?I have witnessed much consternation on Twitter over the last months and weeks about how Copper, a critical industrial element, continues to decline in price. All the while, like most other metals, the exchange vaults are being raided of thousands of tons of physical spot, which futures markets need to back short positions.
One would think this would result in a price increase, and yet, metals have remained exceedingly bearish.
Whether Copper can constitute a commodity in a price action cycle that can be considered bullish, rather than bearish, boils down to whether or not you believe that the $5 all time high set during the 2021-2022 bull run is either the ultimate top or the medium and short term top.
Looking at the monthly, the situation is more clear:
This pattern stands in sharp contrast to say, Soybeans, which has a very similar pattern of price action, but is less bearish over the last 3 months and also failed to set a new all time high during the early 2022 supercycle test run.
Soybeans ZS - Lagging the Pack, but Ready to Go
And is somewhat more like Wheat, which did take out the previous long term high, albeit only on a short term sweep.
Wheat Futures - ZW - Like Snakes in a Can
The contrast is that copper ran the old high three times already. So you really have to consider that the ultimate top may be in.
More information on Copper HG can be discerned from the weekly, which shows notable gaps above $4, a healthy V-Bottom following the July dumps, and a close, albeit not-too-close, range bottom to the key Sept' 20 pivot:
Breaking it down into the daily, we can see that July month end and August open plinked out a dump high, followed by August being characterized by a slow grind upwards before finally selling off at the end of the month:
September, thus far, has opened very bearish, taking out the August pivot (twice, now), yet retaining the overall market structure, and showing an indication that it wants to trade higher.
September is not likely to finish in a straight line down.
What I like about this call is that while I have mixed feelings that copper will ever see $5 again, despite all the fundamentals saying it really ought to trade for a lot more, the reality is that I believe if it were to turn around and dump to new lows in the low $3s or mid-high $2s, it certainly does this, more likely than not, after raiding the $4 level first, based on how price action has developed.
Currently, we're still young in the month and copper has so far traded bearishly, although it's showing a lot of promise in its price action that higher prices, rather than lower prices, are sought for now.
The situation in this world is very strange at present. Energy shortages and food shortages are looming, hard, especially if you are in Europe. Recession, aka "Depression" is looming everywhere, and yet the U.S. equities market is still trading pretty high and for a lot of us life is just normal, albeit not as pleasant as before.
The dollar index is mooning and many critical currencies from other countries, including ones as strong and crucial as Japan, are being slaughtered, and yet, no matter how siren-sounding Twitter is, price action does not reflect a degree of panic really anywhere.
Even WTI Crude Oil, which I called would trade towards the $81 mark at the beginning of August, is trading in such a fashion that despite losing 30% of its value, there is still no fear, no shock and awe.
WTI Crude Oil - Running and Gunning
And even so far as Natural Gas NG has already lost more than 10%, somehow despite all the fundamentals saying otherwise, nobody is batting an eyelid.
Natural Gas / NG - What, Truly, Is a Bull?
Right now, everything, everywhere, is just business as usual, and another dip to buy.
But for how much longer?
A 72 VIX print is looming in the cards, and the lack of fear will truly have such a move catch many off guard.
VIX - 9x8 = 72
The hardest thing in trading is not determining the direction or the targets. Instead, the hardest thing is gauging and predicting _when_ the move will happen and how it will unfold, since time is weaponized, and not very many things go up or down in a straight line all that often.
Frankly, reason stands that the reality is that we will see Copper trade for prices like $10 in the relatively close future, and if so, then this price action we're sitting at is truly the place where the abyss will start to rage from.
But to go long for that day... when does it really unfold? More likely than not, if you want to aim for numbers over $5, you're looking at a date in 2023, and it's very hard to trade options and futures that far out.
And never forget, the world's greatest "black swan" looming is the coming collapse of the Chinese Communist Party .
When that day really unfolds, most of the world's population will be bamboozled and caught off guard, which is why I call it a "black swan." But in reality, it is a development that is so, so easy to see.
If you can't see it, maybe renounce your faith in communism, socialism, Marxist-Leninist stuff, and have better thoughts. Position yourself with the mentality that saw the world defeat Hitler in World War 2. The CCP has killed more than 100 million of its own people during its sanguine 100-year reign, including the 23-year-long organ harvesting persecution against Falun Gong meditation.
How much longer can a group of rogues squatting in Shanghai last, soaked in sins like that?
Rationality is simply too critical, and the level of one's rationality is connected directly to the level of their morality.
How To Go Short Copper (HG)Hi Traders,
This post takes a look at how we can go short on copper. There is a very simple setup to take if price does what I expect it to do. On the daily time frame, Price has managed to give a deeper rejection than I had anticipated in my last copper post, You will see that we are currently rejecting a resistance level on the daily, If you wanted to, you could add fib tool in order to add more confluence. We also have confirmed lower lows and lower highs and I would like to see the current structure price shorting opportunities to go with the overall trend.
On my trading time frame, Price is now facing a minor support level at 3.3800 which could give a short-lived rejection. I would then like to see the break below the level and retest so we can start looking for shorts. Because I am anticipation a new low on the commodity I will be holding my position all the way to 1.3100. The basic break and retest setup is what I will be waiting for on this one.
Looking at the flip side, the current near-term trend is still bullish and It could break the resistance shifting structure all the way bullish. Remember the smaller time frames eventually build into the higher timeframes. I will only be interested in buying above 3.4470.
be sure to keep an eye out on this one. Untill the next post.
Renaldo Philander.
Copper in free fall, but ...It is well known that due to the current circumstances of multifactors of the negative order, they are causing a Global crisis, which in turn cuts the industrial demand, clearly that happened in the past and is clearly illustrated in the last crisis ( "Subprime Crisis" ).
we have clear then the "high ceilings" and the "low floors",.
although there is copper falls without stopping,
but remember that this element is essential for the industry
in future mankind in electromobility plus also of electronics in general and industrial and so on.
and that is why the deep zone would eventually be a good buying zone. ,
also the fall of this metal is closely related to the Chilean ( clp ) peso.
Lets Kill Copper (HG) Back To BackHi Traders,
Looking at Copper (HG) Again, Since the last post it has effortlessly melted to my target. I Now see another short opportunity coming up and I am looking at making sure we can capitalize on the commodity.
The way I am playing this one is that I am using less risk as I would not want to give back any profit if the setup does not work. Looking at the technical, Price has created a small consolidation and then has managed break it with a strong engulfing candle. Price came back is retesting the resistance at 3.25.
I have already entered the position and I am looking to ride the next leg down to 3.0365 which I think will be a beautiful trade.
Let us see how this one plays out.
