TNX 10-Year Yield + Repo Problems + Bonds Extreme LeverageWhen plumbing works well, you don’t need to think about it. That’s usually the case with a vital but obscure part of the financial system known as the repo market.
Bank of International Settlements has been reporting some very interesting documents connecting overleverage by MULTIPLE hedge funds (potentially even my hero Ray at Bridgewater) in the overnight repo market (making a percentage by loaning it out) which is having ripple effects in the TNX, and Bond market - Forcing the Fed to supply liquidity directly from its balance sheet. But the plumbing (Repo=Liquidity) got blown out, and the Fed is plugging the hole with QE.
The about-face interest rate policy from the Fed put significant stress on the overleveraged market.
The Bank of International Settlements is just doing routine reports, I think they don't want to be caught up in it.
Feels crazy, but I think the TNX might fall further.
Stocks and Bonds correlations appear to be absent.
Treasuries are about to see a great rally hereThe squeeze in Treasuries is coming soon. Right now, it's just getting started and testing the break. The narrative of deflation has picked up steam strongly in the past 2 months with oil now clobbered, Powell going dovish (today), stocks down, and many many other reasons.
$DXY $UUP - Movin' on $UUPWith economic uncertainty continuing to grip the financial markets, the US Dollar continues to be in play. As global investors flock to US assets, both stocks and bonds, in search of above average returns and safety, the US Dollar continues to strengthen against its G10 and EM counterparts.
As this trend continues, a key level to watch for the Greenback is its Weekly Resistance Level of $98.19 (Orange). If the US Dollar can breach this level, we expect the Greenback to move higher.
The bond bear is not here yet.... use a log scaleThere have been a lot of talks of a bond bear market over the past year. That would be a big problem, but it's not here yet. The biggest problem is that too many chartists are using and circulating charts of trend resistance breaking in bonds that do not use log scales. I get that it seems intuitively dumb for a yield chart to use a log scale, but that's how this has traded for the better part of the last 20 years. Trade what is, not what you think should be.
Turns out we haven't yet hit the top channel here, so we're not in a bond bear. It also turns out that touching the top channel occurred every time the fed quit hiking rates over the past 30 years, which preceded the last 3 recessions / bear markets by 1-2 months at least.
Short term, we're in a rising wedge that the bond market has obeyed quite well. If we rise directly to the top of the channel, that would imply a May 2019 break of this uptrend and a recession / bear market starting around mid 2019 into 2020. Who knows how this actually plays out, but I know we haven't hit a true bond bear yet, and even when we do, it'll probably be far less exciting than people want to believe.
US 10 Year Bond is testing it's daily uptrend line and supportI posted this as neutral because it can go either way from here. I bought TYO in my 401k two days ago and shorted the future yesterday.
For those who are short, this is a take profit area if support holds. I will put a tight stop loss here. A long position can be taken here depending on the price action. If it breaks support and the uptrend line, short at an appropriate time. usb10yusd -0.25% usually falls with dxy 0.14% strength. Caution: These leveraged etfs are low volume which affects entry and exit prices and liquidity.
