An Introduction To Trading Inside Bar SignalsToday’s lesson is an introduction to the inside bar signal and how to trade it. It’s really one of my favorite patterns to trade, especially on the daily chart time frame. Why, you ask?
It’s simple. The inside bar pattern shows a pause or indecision in the market, and depending on the surrounding price context it formed within, this provides us with an extremely valuable clue about what a market is about to do next.
The inside bar is yet another “tool” in your price action toolbox that will add to your trading strategy which when mastered will help improve your chances of long-term trading success.
Let’s get started with some introductory concepts and theory on inside bars…
What is An Inside Bar?
An inside bar pattern is a multi-bar pattern that consists of a “mother bar” which is the first bar in the pattern, followed by the inside bar. An inside bar pattern can sometimes have multiple inside bars within the same mother bar.
Here is what standard inside bars look like:
As you can see by the image below, inside bars can form exactly in the middle of the mother bar or close to either the high or low, there is not an EXACT way they have to look, just as long as they are contained within high to low distance of the mother bar
4 Variations of Standard Inside Bars
1. Double (multi) inside bar
The “double inside bar” consists of two inside bars within the structure of the mother bar. They are pretty common and often times you will even see 3, 4 or sometimes (rarer) even more inside bars within the same mother bar structure. These patterns signify a prolonged period of indecision in the market and they can come before very powerful breakout moves…
2. Coiling Inside Bars
Coiling inside bar patterns occur when 2 or more inside bars are “coiling” up tighter and tighter like a spring, within one another. Pay special attention when you see these because they mean the market is contracting and just like a spring wound up tighter and tighter, eventually it’s going to “release” and explode into a powerful move (in many cases).
3. Fakey Pattern (inside bar false-break )
The fakey trading pattern is very important in regards to inside bars because there is an inside bar pattern within a fakey. As you can see below, a fakey is actually a false break out from an inside bar pattern. It’s literally where price initially breaks one way from an inside bar pattern, but then quickly reverses, sucking everyone out who was wrong and then charging back the other direction. Obviously, these are giving us VERY intelligent clues as to the next potential direction in price.
4. Inside Bar Pin Bar Combo Pattern
As we all know, pin bars are one of the best price patterns you can trade and when it’s when you get a pin bar that is also an inside bar, that you have an inside bar pin bar combo pattern.
When you combine a pin bar into an inside bar, you are getting both a “wind-up” that is going to be released and a pin bar with a tail / shadow that indicates the next potential direction of the market. Hence, an inside bar is not just a pause in the market, it’s a pause with an extra piece of confluence behind it, and as a result, a more powerful price action signal.
Trading Inside Bar Patterns
There are essentially two main ways we can look to trade inside bars, as with most other patterns; as a continuation signal or as a reversal pattern.
Now, I prefer to trade them as continuation signals in trending markets on the daily chart, because that’s the easiest way to trade them quite frankly. However, inside bars CAN indeed be very powerful at major support and resistance levels as reversals. Let’s look at some examples:
1. Trading Inside Bars as Continuation Move s
The “classic” way to trade an inside bar pattern, and the way that I love trading them the most, is within a trending market, as a continuation move.
An inside bar is much easier to take in a trending market because the odds are already in your favor for trading with the trend. The inside bar will many times lead to a breakout or continuation in-line with the existing trend direction. They can provide a good structure to try to pyramid your trade into a huge win.
Tip : Avoid trading inside bars at major levels until the level has cleared, because many times such inside bars will create a false break at the major level.
2. Trading Inside Bars as “Stall Patterns” / Reversals
Sometimes, you can trade an inside bar as a reversal / stall pattern where price “stalls” out at a level and that leads to a reversal back the other direction.
In the chart below, we can see an example of a good inside bar reversal signal. Notice that the inside bar formed at a key chart level, indicating the market was hesitating and “unsure” if it wanted to move any higher. We can see a strong downside move occurred as price broke down past the inside bar’s mother bar low..
Please note that trading inside bars as reversal patterns should ONLY be tried after you have successfully mastered trading them in-line with the daily chart trend as continuation / breakout plays, as we discussed above.
Special Inside Bar Trading Tip s
Here are some of my tips and tricks when trading inside bars. These are things that I learned over the years that will improve your chances of success when trading this pattern:
1. Tighter inside bar patterns and coiling inside bar patterns often lead to explosive large break out moves. This is because of the “stored energy” that took place as the market “coiled”, that energy typically gets released in the form of a strong breakout move…
2. Patterns containing smaller inside bar patterns allow tighter stop losses and great risk reward, these are the ideal candidates.
3. Be wary of patterns with both very large mother bars and large inside bars, these can often be difficult to trade due to lots of false signals and they make it more difficult to manage risk.
4. My favorite 2 patterns are – Fakey signals and – Inside bar pin bar combos.
5. We must learn to filter inside bars because the one bad thing about them is that a lot of them form across all time frames. However, with proper training and experience on the charts, you will learn to differentiate.
CONCLUSION
This was a basic introduction to the inside bar signal and how I trade it, I cover this pattern and much more in my advanced price action trading courses. Upon joining, some of what you will learn is:
1. More inside bar variations and how to trade them.
2. More example charts.

Inside Bar Candlestick PatternInside bar refers to a candlestick pattern that consists of two candlesticks in which the most recent candlestick will form within the range of the previous candle.
It is the most widely used candlestick pattern and there is a clear logic behind this pattern. It can make you a profitable trader if you will use it in the correct way.
XAUUSD, Daily tf, buy bullish inside bar setup
I found an interesting setup for XAUUSD.
As you can see i've marked the weekly horizontal support and resistance. We're currently holding above 1797 support level after breaking above it yesterday with a solid candle close.
Notice that the last 2 daily candles are inside bar pattern. Today daily candle already break above the mother candle and this downwards movement looks like a retest of support for me.
We're provided with 5R trade setup so i think it is worth to try this buy position.
Buy XAUUSD 1797
Stop loss 1788
Take profit 1842 (5R)
Use only 1-2% risk
Good luck
EURAUD, daily tf, inside bar breakout to the downsideWe see an inside bar pattern on the daily chart and price pretty much break below the candle.
It also closed below EMA-21 and we might see further drop from this pair.
Sell EURAUD 1.5555
Stop loss 1.5635 (80 pips)
Take profit 1.5275 (280 pips)
RR ratio 1 : 3.5
Use only 1-2% risk
Good luck
EURCAD H4 - Potential LongPrices are currently retesting our support zone. We will be waiting for confirmation that this current zone can hold and potentially form a double bottom on this nice zone. We will be looking for a move upside towards the previous resistance zone if the current support zone holds.
CADCHF, daily tf, descending channel short opportunityHello my friends,
I hope you all enjoy your weekend.
I will share my trading plan for next week and i hope it gonna be useful to everyone.
The last few days CAD was so weak that i think it could fuel furher weakness.
All the major pairs was strenghtening against USD but only CAD going into other direction.
My first plan for next week is CADCHF pairs. As you can see we're currently inside a descending channel.
As long as price inside this channel, taking sell/short positons are more favorable.
Only a solid close above this channel can change our bias from sell to buy.
Notice that the Friday candle validate a solid close below the inside bar pattern of previous 2 candles.
We might see a continuation to the downside in the coming week
I am not going to enter right away but i will wait for a retracement towards 0.6935 to enter my sell.
Sell limit CADCHF 0.6935
Stop loss 0.6975
Take profit 0.6855 (2R)
RR Ratio 1 : 2
Use 1-2% risk only
Take partial profit once we got +40pips profit and set SL to entry.
Good luck
VETUSDT Weekly Inside Bar Forming at SupportLast week's candle was a bullish pin bar. We might see another bullish pin bar this week, along with a possible inside bar pattern
Little choice for the market but to break out. Question is, which direction? :)
PS. Still a few hours to go before the weekly close so let's see if we do see an inside bar pattern here.
GBPAUD, 4hr tf, buy an inside bar pattern at EMA-200Hello my friends,
For today i am taking a buy position for GBPAUD pairs.
I found an inside bar pattern on the 4hr timeframe which usually a continuation pattern of current movement.
This inside pattern looks like a bullish inside bar as it occurs exactly at EMA-200 support and it formed at the upper half of previous candle body.
You could also see that price moving inside downward channel for 3 days and i think we could see price break the resitance soon.
It could be because GBP might gain some strength from fundamental issue such as BREXIT deals.
If you wanna buy it from here it is up to you, i myself already bought this pair from 1.8045. I am late to post this because i just get back home and got time to posted it here.
Buy GBPAUD 1.8045
Stop loss 1.7950
Take profit 1 @1.8140
Take profit 2 @1.8235
RR Ratio is 1 : 2
Use only 1-2% risk
Good luck
Disclaimer : I already buy GBPAUD from 1.8045
GLD - Daily - Inside bar setupBearish gold fits the narrative right now - the S&P wants to climb.
Technically, GLD made an inside candle bar today. Inside bars can be bearish continuation patterns if the low of the previous candle (the "mother" candle) can be broken. Or, they can be bullish continuation if the high of the previous candle (the "mother" candle) can be broken. In this situation, I'm looking for a bearish continuation. But, I will wait until the low of the mother candle is broken with a close below it.
Fundamentally, this bearish situation makes sense. SPY (S&P ETF) is doing all it can to break the all time high at roughly 302 ... whether SPY can break above and hold it, is yet to be determined. However, like I was saying, a bearish gold scenario fits this story line. When people are excited (risk on) they take their money out of safe haven equities such as gold (risk off), and put it in riskier investments. Traditionally, gold and bonds are the "safe space" for nervous investors. No nervousness = no "safe space" ... and the GLD sell off should continue. Not too mention, gold is up $200 per ounce YTD; it has room to pull back.

- false breakouts do happen and you will get stopped out as price reverses and hits your stop loss.
- avoid trying to use smaller timeframes to trade inside bars, there will be too many “noise” and false signals.
ADVANTAGES OF THE INSIDE BAR FOREX TRADING STRATEGY
- pure price action trading
- if you trail stop your trades to lock in profit as shown in the previous chart above, you can make a lot of profit if the trend is strong.
- if you trade using the daily chart , you need only a few minutes each day to check your chart, place your pending order (when you spot an inside bar ) and walk away. Check later during the day to see which pending - - order was activated then cancel the other that was not activated.
- its a very easy candlestick pattern to spot, even a housewife who has no prior experience in trading forex can use this system and make money trading forex.
Long opportunity for GbpUsd???The GbpUsd is in an uptrend.
The Pound surged higher against the Dollar and broke the counter-trend line two days ago, followed by a pull-back bar to retest the trend line which has now become the support.
Will the Pound continue to move higher after breaking the Doji's high that formed yesterday?
My position :
Buy Stop Order : 1.3998
SL : 1.3908
TP : 1.4133
