Japan Interest Rate Hikes Often Lead Recessions
Apologies for the late release this week, I was ill yesterday and I am slowly making a recovery. This week I am keeping it brief however the chart really will speak for itself.
If you follow me on Trading view, you can revisit this chart at any time and press play to get the up to date data and see if we have hit any recessionary timeline trigger levels. They are very handy to have at a glance.
The chart illustrates the Japan central banks Interest rate history and overlays the last 7 recessions. A few key patterns and findings are evident from the chart which I will summarize below.
The Chart - ECONOMICS:JPINTR
SUBJECT CHART
◻️ 5 of the last 7 recessions were preceded directly by Japan Interest rate hikes.
- Arguably it is 6 out of 7 if you include the 1980 recession with the 1981 recession (which happened as rates were still declining from the original increase).
⌛️The average length of time from the initial hike to recession was 11.6 months.
- This would be Jan/Feb 2025 based on the initiation of Japan’s rate increases in Feb/Mar 2024. If you read my material you’ll know that the date of Jan 2025 has repeatedly arisen as a concerning date on multiple charts. This does not guarantee anything other than historical time patterns on multiple charts seem to point roughly towards Jan 2025 as a month of concern.
◻️ The minimum time frame from initial hike to recession was 8 months (Oct 2024) and the maximum time frame 18 months (Aug 2025). This can be our window of concern.
◻️ Its important to note that the rates have remained elevated or increasing for longer than the above timelines outset. In this chart we are only looking at the the first rate increase to recession initiation timeline. We are doing this establish a risk time frame. In the event rates remain elevated into month 11.6 (the average timeframe) we will know we are entering dangerous territory (Jan 2025). Likewise we could go a long as 18 months which is the maximum timeframe. This is all dependent on rates remaining elevated or increasing. A reduction in rates could deter or remove the risk timelines discussed.
What happens next is dependent on what the Japan Central bank does. History suggests when they start to increase rates its for a minimum of 6 - 8 months (Sept - Oct 2024), lets see if they pass these months and start to move towards Jan 2025 (the average time line from rate increase initiation to recession). This is a move into higher risk territory.
I want to add last week summary as a reminder that multiple other charts are lining up to suggest we may have volatility in the coming 6 months:
Macro Monday 58
Recession Charts Worth Watching
What to watch for in coming weeks and months?
▫️ If both the 10 - 2 year treasury yield spread and the U.S. Unemployment Rate continue in their upwards trajectory in coming weeks and months, this is a significant risk off signal and recession imminent warning.
▫️ Since 1999 the Federal reserve interest pauses have averaged at 11 months. July 2024 is the 11th month. This suggests rate cuts are imminent.
▫️ The 2 year bond yield which provides a lead on interest rate direction is suggesting that rates are set to decline in the immediate future and that the Fed might lagging in their rate cuts. Furthermore, rate cuts are anticipated in Sept 2024 by market participant's.
▫️ Finally, rate cuts should signal significant concern as most are followed immediately by recession or followed by a recession within 2 to 6 months of the initial cut. Yet the market appears to be calling out for this. This is high risk territory. Combine this with a treasury yield curve rising above the 0 level and an increasing U.S. unemployment rate and things look increasingly concerning.
(for all of the above charts see last weeks Macro Monday).

Interestratehike
$GBINTRS - BoE's Snowball - The Bank of England (BOE) decided to deliver its #inflation medicine in a bigger dose
at their recent monetary policy committee meeting.
The bank made the shock decision to raise borrowing costs a half percentage point,
taking the official rate to 5% ;
double the size of the increase anticipated by most economists.
BoE hiking interest rates to 5% ,
it adds further strain to millions of homeowners across the country.
The Central Bank Rates was upped by 0.5% from 4.5% previously
and remains at it's Highest Level since 2008 Financial Crisis.
Fed's Hope in 2024 - Their Projection & PlanDuring the December FOMC conference, the fed said the appropriate level for interest rate or the fed funds rate will be 4.6% at the end of 2024 from current 5.5%, 3.6% at the end of 2025, and 2.9% at the end of 2026.
Many reporters take that as Fed’s hint to cut rate in 2024, but the Fed added saying these projections are not the committee decision or plan.
So what is the difference between a projection and a plan? And how will the market performance in 2024?

18/09/23 Weekly outlookLast weeks high: $26894.1
Last weeks low: $25873.8
Midpoint: $24853.5
After CPI and PPI news events that took place last week, we can see a clear uptrend after a deviation below the midpoint, then a reclaim and a move up higher.
This week we have FOMC and the interest rate decision. The forecast is for the interest rate to remain the same at 5.50%. This decision has been priced in IMO but that doesn't rule out any potential whipsawing in the minutes up to and following the decision, we also have the press conference that can give some volatility too. However, if last weeks news events are anything to go by the volatility will be low compared to previous FOMC's.
The bigger picture plan stays the same for me, I do think we're moving towards that yearly open retest before thinking about the run up to the halving and the bullrun beyond. A retest of 28k resistance with a bearish reaction off that level would further add confluence to this idea. As for now staying patient and looking for opportunities outside of the choppy price action.
How does the interest rate affect the markets? How does the interest rate affect the markets?
We often hear in the news that the market is rising or falling after decisions or some statements by the Fed. We also often talk about the dollar index, so let's use simple words and with a cheat sheet at the end of the video, I'll show you how it works SP:SPX BITSTAMP:BTCUSD
What is the FED
The Federal Reserve is a network of financial institutions that together make up the central bank of the United States of America.
Why is the Fed cutting rates?
When the economy is not doing well, the FOMC can make interest rates lower, encouraging people to take out loans and stimulate economic activity.
What happens when interest rates rise
Central banks raise rates when there is a high risk of recession and stagflation (high inflation, very low GDP growth)
The higher the rate, the more expensive money is for banks and, as a result, loans become more expensive for the entire economy.
A rate cut means a reduction in the cost of loans.
Bitcoin, due to its large capitalization, has become highly correlated with traditional markets
A change in the rate affects the entire money markets. An increase in discount rates leads to a decrease in the cost of bonds and an increase in yields across the entire class of fixed income instruments. Bank deposit rates go up, and bond yields go up for investors. And vice versa.
Use this cheat list like visualisation of potential market upcoming moves
Is the Worst OVER? This is the differential of 10yr vs 1yr US bond which represents long term against short term yield on sovereign debt, and those you don't know, short term bonds are used by central banks to control interest rates(amazing uh? the FED does not actually print money) therefore they do use bonds as a tool to control interest rates which then controls the S&D of capital.
As you can see, we are back at a differential which is extremely low, back to energy crisis levels. However, we seem to be already at very low levels, does that mean THE WORST HAS COME? What is going to happen to the stock market?
A very quick and personal thought to sum everything up as I do not consider myself an expert macroeconomist: the market is efficient, meaning that the current price on every single security is traded at all the current public information that is available and if something keeps going up, it means that expectation are in favor of it moving higher.
Hope that explains what I wanted to say,
Feel free to ask question, be safe!
SPY: FLUSH OR RALLY / MARKET BREADTH / MARKET MAKERS TIMINGDescription: In the chart above I have provided a semi-macro analysis of SPY that compares ongoing market rally and past rallies within the range of 420 & 360 Points.
Points:
1. Price Action is fast approaching 420 Resistance that has been indicative of a turn around for past 4 rallies that failed to break the 420 LEVEL.
2. First 2 rallies under the 420 Level showed signs of congruence when it came to market breadth and price action.
3. Last 3 rallies including current one has shown divergence with market breadth along with a distinct pattern of consolidation that is followed by a sudden drop in price action.
4. It is important for price action to have another leg even if current uptrend is continued.
First Price Target: 404.64 Bouncing Support
Second Price Target: 400 Critical Support
Market Breadth:
1. Showing strong signs of divergence with average price action continuing to rise. The Tech Sector is mainly responsible for the upholding of this rally with giants like AAPLE, NVIDIA, AMD, AMAZON, META, & GOOGLE fighting against bearish momentum.
2. For the majority of US INDICES Tech companies like AAPLE, NVIDIA, AMD, AMAZON, META, & GOOGLE represent a large majority of the holdings within many US INDICES. So it is no coincidence for why market breadth may appear weak when only a couple holdings are contributing to rallies meanwhile a large majority of the holdings are in the red.
3. Market Breadth Levels of 4200 have been indicative of volatile declines in price action in the past with an average incoming 10 POINT DECLINE over a day or two.

Yield curve is inverted today - Its implication and attributeWe have an inverted yield curve today - When the near end yields or interest rates is higher than the far end, we have an inverted yield.
What is its implication and any attributes?
To understand the implications of an inverted yield curve, it is crucial to know what a yield curve is and how it works.
A healthy yield curve –
It shows the relationship between the interest rate and the time to maturity of the bond. A normal yield curve slopes upward, meaning that long-term bonds have a higher yield than short-term bonds. This upward sloping curve indicates that investors demand a higher yield to hold longer-term bonds, as they are taking on more risk by locking up their money for a longer time.
An unhealthy or inverted yield curve –
However, an inverted yield curve occurs when short-term yields are higher than long-term yields. This situation indicates that investors are willing to accept lower yields on longer-term bonds, which is an indication of their pessimism about the economy's future growth prospects. Essentially, investors are willing to lock up their money for an extended period, accepting a lower yield, because they expect economic conditions to deteriorate.
Its implication –
i. It is a reliable predictor of an upcoming economic recession. This phenomenon has been observed many times over the years, and every time an inverted yield curve has occurred, a recession has followed. The reason for this is that an inverted yield curve indicates that investors are losing confidence in the economy, which can lead to decreased investment and spending. This, in turn, can lead to a slowdown in economic growth, which ultimately results in a recession.
ii. Another implication of an inverted yield curve is that it can make borrowing more expensive for certain individuals or companies. Banks typically borrow at short-term rates and lend at long-term rates, earning a profit on the difference between the two. However, an inverted yield curve makes this process less profitable for banks, and they may become less willing to lend, resulting in a tightening of credit conditions.
Attribute –
Short-term fixed deposit saver. ie. Keep rolling your 3-month fixed deposit saving or traders trading into the expected volatility.
In conclusion, an inverted yield curve, where the current Fed fund rate and 3-month yield is higher than the 30-year yield, is a rare occurrence in the bond market that has significant implications for the economy. It is a reliable predictor of an upcoming recession and can result in higher borrowing costs for some individuals and companies. Investors should be aware of this phenomenon and take it into account when making investment decisions.

Travel between weekly pivot pointsFX:EURUSD is at the weekly support point. FED is in the corner and will have hard times to further increase the interest rates. If ECB increases interest rates by 0.5 tomorrow, we will visit the weekly pivot point (1.062) and weekly first resistance (1.072). If they fail to meet the expectation due to Credit Suisse crisis now, we may see further drop to channel support (~1.04).

DAX H4: Too early for bears to enter? Fed did it again.Bears in Twitter start to ask themselves whether they were all wrong or they were too early to bet against the market after the Fed was hawkish-but-not-too-hawkish in yesterday's meeting. DAX is a heavily automotive, banks and other cyclic assets weighted European index. Europe has performed better than America, but if ECB decides to implement an even more hawkish strategy than that of the Fed, those "better European gains" will vanish relatively soon. That is why, together with the current economic, political and social-unrest context; I am beginning to feel bearish on DAX and CAC. DAX could be shaping a H&S pattern the next days that could end up pretty bad if inflation does not calm down, ECB continues to raise rates and unemployment increases.
Therefore, my prediction is that DAX will not reach ATHs and stay around 15580-16250 to drop later on to 11350-13350.
Could there be again a Head and Shoulders on its way?
US Interest Rate news potentially bullish USDDXY has always been a barometer for me. However, since Dec 2022 till today, it has been lack luster. Most of the time just consolidation, which is causing other pair such as GBPUSD & EURUSD to behave erratically. I suppose year end and beginning of the year are times where price action is a little harder to read.
None the less, in the past week, DXY have been steadily building some support at 101.000. Perhaps the 100.000 area is heavily defended, which I am not 100% certain why but we shall see.
Looking at Ichimoku Kinko Hyo, on H4 timeframe, it looks like Sanyaku Kouten (3 Bullish Signs) is starting to form. Will have to monitor day by day to observe its formation.
Jobs market in the US has been robust and resilient. This gives a lot of reason for Federal Reserve to hike rates but at a slower pace. 25 basis point seems to be the key figure in mainstream media.
Hence, when interest rate goes up, that will be bullish for the Dollar. Could this Federal Fund Rate high impact news next Wednesday be the catalyst to get DXY out of the consolidation? Maybe.
With China's re-opening, there is definitely some optimism building up globally and it feels like, we could potentially dodge the recession bullet. Can we?
Anyways, with that said, there might be a potential risk off scenario with DXY next week and that directly translate to bearishness for the others.
Good luck and good trading.

Interest rate up to at least 6.5% in 2023, why?The Fed chairman has given the market a very important clue on 13 Dec 22.
At what level will he consider an interest rate cut?
He said “I wouldn't see us considering rate cuts until the committee is confident that inflation is moving down to 2% in a sustained way,” meaning only if CPI is heading nearing 2% then it is hopeful to see a rate cut.
Market consensus for CPI to range between 5% to 8..9% for this year. If this is true, the Fed is likely to continue to hike the rate moderately at 0.25% in each meeting just to bring inflation down.
I am seeing this as the best case scenario.

Nasdaq Up 4% After Dovish Fed CommentsSeveral tech & healthcare sector stocks making an early bullish run such as AMD, KLA and DXCM after a dovish Federal Reserve comments on slowing down interest rates hike. However, Fed mentioned interest rates may floating around the 5% level until they see interest rates remain low within the next quarter.

NOTES- Currently fundamentals is against the dollar due to fed meetings on looking to slow down interest rates in the near future. Our next interest hike is on December 14. Will the feds keep up the 0.75% basis hike or will it be 0.50% this time around ? If the feds slow down interest hikes and our last final interest hike for Dec 2022 is lower than the previous hikes, we can expect the dollar will fall. Im expecting them to keep the 0.75% in December ending the year off with the dollar pushing back up to around 110.00- 112.00
US interest rate, and exchange rate of Japan Yen and Korean WonThe trend of Japanese Yen and Korean Won within most of year 2022, as can be observed when reading together with the chart of USinterest rate, show how closely linked their relationship are.
Recently government of relevant countries have been attempting to change this situation by putting money into the foreign currency exchange market, but as long as interest rate of each of those countries aren't increasing accordingly, and US interest rate still keeping up, no change in this trend is expected.
GBP/USD analysis: BoE hikes needed to curb gilts' term premiumFinally unveiled, the UK government's Autumn Budget was conservative and cautious, in line with market expectations.
A fiscal consolidation of £55 billion has been announced, to be split evenly between more taxes and lower spending. From the next year until 2028, windfall taxes on oil and gas companies will increase from 25% to 35%, while the Energy Price Guarantee programme (EPS) has been revised to cut down on government spending. These two measures dominate the UK's fiscal adjustment.
But now that the threat of losing the anchor of fiscal credibility has ended, sterling investors are once again confronted with the reality of the UK economic outlook.
Inflation is expected to average 7.4% in 2023, but GDP will shrink 1.4% due to the recession. A higher and more persistent inflation rate requires the Bank of England to maintain its restrictive stance for a longer period of time. Furthermore, the longer inflation stays high, the more difficult it will be for gilts to lure buyers to these negative real yields, especially since the BoE will restart quantitative tightening in late November.
GBP/USD has risen from 1.036 to 1.203 following the reversal of September's mini-budget, primarily due to lower gilt yields, as recovered market confidence in fiscal policy has stimulated demand for UK sovereign bonds.
Gilt yields likely bottomed out before the UK Autumn Budget, as the market had largely anticipated the fiscal consolidation, and could now resume a natural upward repricing, not in a disorderly fashion, but adequately to reflect a high inflation/high interest rate environment.
The outlook for the pound is now dependent on the Bank of England's policies.
Hawkish BoE = Neutral/bullish scenario for the pound
If the BoE turns out to be more hawkish than expected – markets are currently pricing in 60bps in December and terminal rate of 4.5% next year – it can better control inflationary expectations and pressures. In this scenario, UK interest rates will increase quicker than UK 10-year gilt yields, limiting the term premium and enhancing policy credibility. This is a favourable scenario for the pound, as it can restrict the downside and discourage speculators from shorting a currency with a high yield.
Dovish BoE = Bearish scenario for the pound
In contrast, if the BoE delivers fewer rate hikes than the market currently predicts, inflation expectations will not be restrained and long-term gilt yields would rise faster than UK interest rates, effectively placing downside pressure on the pound.
EURUSD BULLISH SEEKING CHANNEL OR BRAKEOANDA:EURUSD The hot topic on the markets, will it keep the trend reversal by seeking a channel or break the resistances at 1.0350 or check the par once again around EU Interest, purely chart reading suggests that channel, once again the traders are those who drive the boat and may change direction at any time regardless of the wind. December is coming, keep in mind the US meets a day before the EU, on the 14th and the 15th Dec, there will be many opportunities for speculations there.

My last Warning for buyers (Educational)Hi Everyone,
Today i will give some educational
from fundamental:
1. FED raising Interest rate for the 3rd time, its 90% 75bps , and it will pressure the risk asset such as gold and bitcoin.
2. FED Jeremy Powel and his team pretty consistance and commited to bring down inflation and catch up short term interest rates especially to the core PCE inflation number that still slightly above 5 percent
3.FED commit not slowing the pace until "something Break", it means they will bring recession to make inflation down there will more jobless, more slow Economy growth which give big damage to stock market and any other risk asset.
4.Geopolitical Tension is not end and seems it will be take a long time (for this moment), specially After Saudi willing to join BRICS and dont want to help US to boost the OIl production and make a price cap for cheap oil.
from technical:
1. the candle 4 hours fail to break the past resistance
2. there is high volume for 1680 to break.
3. the fundamental is not good for gold to break this time, we have seen 1st and 2nd reaction after FED release their 75bps hike.
When FED to pivot:
the chance is only when something breaks, and the inflation rate is going back down. maybe there is 2% gap between Interest rates number and inflation rate number.

US 10 Year Treasury Yield: What's Next?Quick Analysis on 10 Year Treasury Yield on a 1M Linear Chart.
1) The US 10 Year Treasury Yield has been respecting a falling channel for multiple decades going back to the 1980s.
2) It is currently headed to the top trendline of the channel with a possibility to break in the coming months.
3) The measured move of the falling channel would bring it back to Pre-2008 ranges.
4) This may fall in line with the US Dollar strengthening (in the idea section below).
5) If US 10 Year Treasury Yield goes lower, there is not much more room for it to get to 0.
