Risk appetite in the markets? Checking the $XLY / $XLP quotientI have this quotient in my watchlist to monitor the risk appetite of the market. The AMEX:XLY ETF (Consumer Discretionary) is a good indicator of high risk appetite because its holdings are more focus on growth therefore are more volatile. And the AMEX:XLP ETF (Consumer Staples) is more focus in value stocks, therefore less volatile.
AMEX:XLY with holdings like NASDAQ:AMZN , NASDAQ:TSLA and NYSE:MCD . And AMEX:XLP with holdings like NYSE:KO , NASDAQ:PEP and NASDAQ:COST .
Right now the quotinet XLY/XLP is near a breakout off a base to make an all time high, while its 20 day moving average is croosing the 50 moving average. This are good news to this bull market.
Quotient
Just a little bullish sign I usually use this chart to see the health of the stock market. The INDEX:MMFI is a good indicator to see if an uptrend is backed by the mayority of the stocks that play the market and not only the big caps leaders. This little divergence between the price action and its RSI shows that this indicator may go higher. Although, is a short term time frame so I'm still very cautious about getting in again.
Another good chart that I looking is the quotient SPY/UST, and recently it made a breakout to new highs. So, here are to bullish signals for the overall market. Still, the volatility is to high so, be very picky with the stock you buy or short.
Watching quotients can give a good edge about the market This time is AMEX:SPY / AMEX:UST which compares the U.S. stock market with the U.S. bond market. So, right now is heading to test a very strong resistance in 5.20 points, while for the last few weeks is been divergent from its RSI, all "selling signals". Normally when this quotient gives this signals is because the stock market is losing strength and a correction is on the way because the "smart money" is selling stocks to buy bonds.
There's no way to predict how strong could be the correction or even if it will happen, the best thing you could do is to rise stop-loss, sell extended stocks and low stock positions. That is what I have been doing.
