Sometimes things aren’t as simple as applying a hotfix. Alongside Bitcoin’s forking history, altcoins have also been subject to the odd change or two. As suggested by the name, ‘forking’ happens when a cryptocurrency releases a significant software or protocol change to its system. Users can apply the update and go with the flow… or stick to the old ways and refuse to upgrade. If the change is significant, this produces a ‘hard fork’ and – if adopted by a critical mass of people – can result in the creation of a new cryptocurrency. These often go on to enjoy new notoriety with a series of upgrades and updates, positioning them as legitimate alternatives on the market.
