Choosing an entry on UNHAfter strong earnings and a guidance upgrade, I've just been waiting for an entry point on UNH . Today we are oversold on the hourly RSI and stochastic , and I'm seeing a little bullish divergence coming in on the hourly MACD histogram. We've got support at 254.44 from the 20-day moving average, though there's not a lot of volume located here on the volume profile . I've taken a small long position here, and I'll buy more if we get down closer to 250, where there's more volume and also support from the 50-day and 200-day moving averages.

UNH selloff offers an important reminder about earnings playsThis morning I read UnitedHealth Group's earnings report and purchased some shares at about yesterday's closing price. The report was extremely positive. UnitedHealth not only beat analyst estimates, but also raised its guidance for the rest of the year. Ordinarily these results would get a big pop, but instead the stock promptly sold off to the tune of 2-3%. This offers me an important reminder about something I knew, but had forgotten: it's not just the content of the earnings report that matters, but also the recent price action. UNH had gained steadily for 2 months and popped 5% a few days before earnings, which implies that investor expectations were higher than analyst estimates. In fact, it's possible that the earnings result leaked early, and that this was a case of investors buying the hype and selling the news. Regardless, UNH was overbought and sitting at strong resistance level going into earnings. It didn't have a lot of room to run, so instead it corrected downward. It's still in an upward channel and should post some gains in the coming week. By contrast, Chewy's share price has been falling recently, and after hours today it's popping despite missing analyst estimates by 1 cent per share. This suggests that investor expectations for Chewy were lower than analyst estimates. (It also shows how good a job Chewy's PR people did at framing its disappointing results in terms of a positive year-over-year improvement in the press release.)

United Health breakout above trendline resistanceUNH is looking like a great buy. Not only did it break out today above a downward trendline, but it's also near the bottom of an upward-sloping parallel channel. Fundamentals look good too, with generally positive analyst ratings and a series of recent earnings beats. Healthcare is hot right now, with its low China exposure and other sectors looking overbought. UNH next reports earnings in mid-July. Until then I expect a good medium-term bull run in UNH.

UNITEDHEALTH IS A STRONG BUY ON TECHNICALS AND FUNDAMENTALS The first four months of 2019 has been very uncomfortable for investors in the healthcare services sector, UNH was one of the last stocks to crumble in the last quarter of 2018 as investors rushed to cash. Interest is now back in the sector as tech is becoming overbought once again, oil tumbles and retail dwindles, UNH is the safe haven once again. Expansion worldwide, hiring growth,great earnings, guidance raise and less political attention have turned the chart bullish, as a major correction has reversed and is making its way back through resistance levels back to it's all time high level soon.

UNH: DOW30 Healthcare Value ReboundI've been researching stocks in the healthcare sector recently, and it seems that the places to put your money are into healthcare operators, hospital services, and medical facility REITs. United Healthcare got beaten down with the rest of the healthcare sector in late April. However, they rebounded in the other direction after their earnings call. I've been watching them to wait for a stronger trend to set in, and I believe the time is now. Volume spiked on earnings and has remained relatively flat since, so neither a drop or spike in volume is a good side that the buyers are holding and the sellers are having to be bid up to let go of their shares. As for technicals, the price just popped above the 50 day moving average and the 20 day moving average shows a clear bottoming out and converging to overtake the 50 day. MACD has been weakly bullish in the histogram but just crossed positive, and this is confirmed with the holders sentient sloping upward and going positive. For trendedness, ADX is 17 showing that the old trend is long dead but a new one is still shaping up, but DI+ diverging from ADX and DI- shows that a new uptrend is brewing. RSI is sloping upward with the Friday and Monday above 50, so prices are out of oversold territory and rebounding but not yet oversold. Money flow continues to be positive, and the short interest is idling along showing that there's not a lot of confidence in betting against the stock. Beyond the technicals, UNH is in a good position to weather this current bout of the trade war. They're primarily a domestic healthcare provider and operator, and they're going to benefit from the falling price in goods rather than be hurt by it. Demand for healthcare is fairly inelastic, and investors are going to seek shelter in service providers of various types with low risk exposure to selling goods or dealing with rising prices from import/export dynamics.
