Scale out before this POPSWhen the mainstream media was telling you that China was not investable, I was working hard on my TA and buying positions. I consider myself a contrarian investor, this is where the best opportunities present themselves. If you follow my trades here you will know I had called out the start of the new bull run in the Hong Kong exchange, or the dead-cat bounce spending on how you look at it, very early on.
I took the basket approach on a handful of Chinese names. Namely Alibaba, BYD, Tencent, Baidu and Pop Mart.
This worked out very well for me (except Baidu) but nothing better than Pop Mart, unfortunately the smallest position of the lot.
So why a Chinese toy company? If you have children into the latest and hottest toys, I suggest you look into the parent company. This particular company had a beautiful chart as it had broken the end of the downtrend, along with a reclaim of the POC. What followed was a gargantuan 1000% rise. I have taken 50% off the table today as I see this as the final wave of the Wave 5 supercycle. I do think this still has legs and profits will continue to soar for the next quarter or two, but I’m not greedy, this has exceeded my expectations and then some. So I have started to scale out, this is the way.

From the 40 dollar range when I first discovered but did not nibble or go LONG (yes , I wanted to kill myself, haha), this stock has gone up 492% !!!! Not in 10 years time but merely 1 year. It beats most of the tech stocks in US as well.
If there is any consolation , here it is . It will be included in the HSI components and so long as I am LONG in HSI, I will still benefit in the rise though not as meteoric on its own.
We are now in the year 2025 and investing theme may also need to be adjusted like the good old Food & beverage , Personal Care, Banks, Financials ,etc. We now need to look at the world of investing in a different lens.
I will make it a point to go out more often to hunt for new ideas, read more extensively and in search of the next multi-bagger.
Win some and lose some, move on - Pop Mart I first discovered this stock somewhere in November last year when my daughter and I were out shopping in town. We came across its retail shop in Orchard and went in to take a look. I have never seen such toys before and were amazed more by the crowd than anything. They were mostly teenagers and long queues were forming when we left.
Days later, I went to a nearby shopping mall to get some groceries and again I saw its vending machine. I took a picture to remind myself to check it out. It was around the 40 dollars range and I wanted it to pull back before taking a position. In the end, I did not and sad to say, the price has gone up almost 2.5x !!!!
Weeks later, I was surprised to see more articles coverage on this company, add salt to my wound for not buying and there were even some local TV coverage as well (reaching a critical mass for the media to take notice - a good sign).
It is always easy to look at things on hindsight - what if it had gone south and went 2.5x down? Would I not sit back and say, how wise of me, haha. Live and let live, no point regrets, move on to the next better player in town.
Did it comes as a surprise that guys are popping in to Popmart ?There were many on social media voicing their opinions why are so many people crazy over these figurines? Some said it is overpriced and others mentioned fakes are coming up just as much when there is a new launch. It seems to be a global trend right now though not sure how long it will last.
It differs from other toys in that the company seek our famous and emerging artists to design these toys so you can say they are limited series or unique pieces. Collectors are crazy over them, willing to pay high price or queue for hours to get their hands on it.
I read an article somewhere that says the Gen Z who works in the office will prefer buying these toys to decorate their cubicle than plants. Is this true ?
I am awaiting for the price to retrace more before nibbling.....
Do you know what the millennials like these days ?Read more about this company here , here , here and here
The mystery behind what you gonna get for the toy becomes an attraction and sometimes become an addiction to some hard core buyers, willing to shelf more money than common sense would dictate to go acquire it. Such is the trend today and I forsee it is a sticky one , one that is capable of becoming a talking point in social media, IG, youtube ,etc.
