The fund focuses on companies committing material resources to the research, development and application of fifth generation (5G) and next generation digital cellular technologies. Included securities are comprised from two sub-themes: i) 5G infrastructure & hardware, and ii) telecommunication service providers. Within the first sub-theme, the types of companies included are data center REITs, cell tower REITs, equipment manufacturers, network testing and validation equipment, and mobile phone manufacturers. Within the second sub-theme are companies operating cellular and wireless communication networks offering access to 5G networks. NXTG includes mid- and large-cap companies. Prior to Feb 2021, the fund was named First Trust AlphaDEX U.S. Energy Sector Index ETF with ticker FHE.
